My youngest came down the stairs with an interesting assortment of clothing  in hand earlier this week. The graduation gown, linen jacket I haven't worn in five years and black dress were heading to school to become costumes for a theatre project. After helping her stuff things in a bag, and watching her drag it onto the bus, I realized I should have told her not to bring any of it back! This could be a novel new way to clean out closets at the beginning of the new year... Now, if she could just find a project that needed the fabrics scattered on my sewing room floor I would be all set!

Wishing you creative solutions and Happy New Year!

Fat Quarter Fling!
Saturday ~ January 21st ~ 10:00am-5:00pm

Our favorite pre-cut at an incredible price - how much better can it get?! Well, in addition to offering all pre-cut, in-stock fat quarters for just $1.29 each, we will share a project demo featuring fat quarters that Barb has worked up, a chance to win a wonderful door prize basket filled with fat quarters, a display of books and patterns featuring fat quarters, and the chance to literally fling some fabric! You've got to squeeze a stop at QC into your schedule on Saturday! (And if you own our 2017 QC date book you will want to check out the info on the bottom of the January page!)

We are beginning to make kits for the wonderful new block-by-block programs we will be sharing at the beginning of 2017. There are lots - I think they filled two whole pages in our new class schedule! We file everything you need in a single huge filing cabinet. The only problem - it's time for someone (ok, me!) to clean out the cabinet!  Please make sure you have all the pieces you need for last year's quilts - monthly patterns, kits, setting directions... By the end of the month we will no longer have what you may be missing!
We are excited to add two new clubs to the mix in the shop this winter. They both sound like fun- maybe you should join us for ~

EPP Club beginning
Friday, January 20th at 10:30am.
This club is for the English Paper Piecing fans in the crowd and for those who wonder what all the fuss is about. The group will focus on learning the traditional technique, while creating hexagon blocks in their choice of color and fabric style. You have got to love Kathie's club sample pieces - Tula meets EPP! There will be lots of other projects shared during the sessions - sounds like a great way to spend chilly winter days!

Fabric Fanatics Club begins
Thursday, January 19th at 7:00pm
At each meeting this group will check out the newest fabrics in the shop and look into ways to incorporate new ideas, techniques and patterns into their existing collections. The emphasis is on keeping you up to date and inspired - always a good idea!
For complete details about these clubs, lots of other clubs, upcoming events and classes check out our new class schedule.
New Books and Patterns!

There is a book that we have had in the wrong section of the book rack since the day it arrived. The cover looks just like a trendy coloring book, but that's not what it is. "180 Doodle Quilting Designs" is actually packed with ideas and designs for free-motion quilting. The black and white illustrations on it's cover are just a tiny example of what you will find as you turn the pages. The designs are presented by style in bold drawings, with their stitching paths clearly marked. Each design is shown filling a triangle, square and border segment - obviously incredibly helpful. Karen Burns, the author, encourages you to practice the "doodles" by first tracing the lines with paper and pencil. From there you could move to a small sample set (fabric, batting and backing like those in your quilt) and then on to your quilt. This is a marvelous reference you will turn to over and over - we love it! Book $27.99

"Out of the Box" is a bold new design from Kristin Lawson. The graphic pieced quilt is shared in two sizes, crib and throw. One look at the 72" x 72" cover quilt in Tula prints and I was hooked. In fact, this would be a great quilt for those who have Tula scraps. Many of the pieces can be cut from fairly small bits, while others will require fat quarters. The pattern includes several diagrams - layout diagrams in color with measurements included (there is also a list of the measurements) and diagrams to help you most efficiently cut your background fabric. Kristin suggests laying out the different sections before beginning to piece - very good advice. She suggests pinning the seams - she says the long ones, but I say all of them!  You will also find arrows that will help position directional fabrics correctly and numbers to help you piece in the correct order. With Kristin's pattern, a bit of organization, and stitching, you can turn your scrap pile into one fantastic quilt. Pattern $10.00

Do you love projects that help you perfect a specific technique? How about becoming a pro with half square triangles while making a spectacular star quilt? Yes, a tidy stack of little half square triangles, and really large ones, make up  Sugar Cookie. I like that the pattern uses two different techniques to create the triangles, and explains them with color diagrams. Easy to follow instructions, and a great design, make this an accessible, appealing project for everyone from beginners to advanced sewists. Plus, it's charm pack friendly! I know I have a "few" charm packs begging to be stars, how about you! Pattern $9.00
